Search engine optimization is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to your website from search engines. Over the years you have probably heard about Meta keywords. Meta keywords used to be a major factor in getting your website ranked in the search engines, but over the years, it has become apparent that Meta keywords are useless for SEO. In the 90’s & early 2000s, Webmasters could easily spam the search. Webmasters would pack their Meta tags with tons of keywords. This helped the website get ranked very quickly. However, most search engines, especially Google, have greatly refined their algorithms and are placing no importance on the Meta Keywords tag. Because of this, it is recommended to avoid devoting time or effort into your Meta keywords.
Meta tags are basically high-level data about what a particular page on a website is about. When the search engine spiders crawl your website, they ignore these keywords. Search Engines instead focus on content that is generated on a page. In the world of SEO, content is king.
Although this has been known for years, you would still be amazed at how many people who are new to SEO still focus on Meta Keywords. Having the ability to ignore this aspect of your optimization plan can give you more time to focus on more important items like writing quality content. Website owners and SEOs have long been abusing Meta tags to spam the search engines, which is the main reason Google announced they de-emphasize them. The Google algorithm has become so much more sophisticated that it can understanding what a website is about without needing to rely on Meta tags or descriptions.
If you can continue to focus on writing compelling, helpful content, you will naturally generate links for your website and create an online opinion of your content ( via social signals), which will be a big determination of where you rank. Good Luck!
