When it comes to SEO, one of the most important facets is setting up and optimizing your Meta Tags. Meta Tags essentially are HTML attributes that provide the search engines with information about what that page is about.
Typically there are 3 main Meta Tags that are used which are the Title, Description, and Keywords. We have previously provided tips on writing your Page Titles and with Google mentioning that the keywords tag is not taken into account anymore we are just left with one.
It is the Meta Description tag. Meta Descriptions provide concise explanations of the contents of web pages and are commonly used by search engines on search result pages to display preview snippets for a given page.
Your Meta Description can be found between your webpage’s <head> </head> section. Here’s how a Meta Description typically looks for in a site’s source code:
<meta name=”description” content=“An Interactive Marketing Agency offering internet marketing services ranging from SEO, PPC, web design, and social media. Memphis based, serving nationwide.” />
As stated above, your webpage’s Meta Description will show like this in the search results:
So now we know what and where a Meta Description resides. We are going to provide tips on how to write compelling Meta Descriptions for SEO.
Power of Uniqueness – It is extremely important that you are unique and sell your business. It gives you an opportunity to rise above the spam and non-relevant results. Craft your descriptions with a fresh voice that reflect your business. Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd. Be creative and get noticed!
Grammar Matters – Nothing is worse than having a description with bad grammar or misspelled words. Remember first impressions are everything. Don’t let a misspelled word turn off potential clients.
Character Length – Search Engines shows roughly 155 characters in their search engine results, so make sure you stick to the limit.
Call To Action – Be sure to include a call to action into your description that will entice searchers to take immediate action by clicking on your link.
Complement Your Title – It is important that your description is a complement of your Page Title. You should always try to incorporate the keywords you are targeting for SEO in your title and Meta descriptions without being spammy.
Push The Brand – If you have brand name or a well-known product name add these to your descriptions. Any opportunity to advertise is an opportunity for branding.
