Whether you’re a government agency, non-profit organization, or have a really unique product you invented on your own, it’s easy to say that you don’t have any competition. You’re the only company of your kind in existence, or at least in your area, so when people need your product or services it’s a no-brainer. This then brings up the question of SEO. SEO is about creating visibility for your company on search engines so that relevant customers will find you, click around on your website, and hopefully turn into a sale. It is therefore easy to ask yourself: If my company has no competition, is there any point in spending money on SEO campaigns?

Sure it is a great way to set yourself apart from the competition and rank above all of those competitors on a SERP, but there are other benefits to SEO. - Search Engine Communication. SEO is about gaining visibility to connect with consumers, absolutely, but it’s also about communicating with search engines. Search engines crawl your website for quality content and give you a PageRank based on the links you have build, your navigation, etc. Regardless of competition, you want search engines to see you in a good light so you can get that great PR and show your customers that you really are the best no matter what—you’re not just to the only thing available.
- Future Competition. This overlaps with the last point. If you have a good relationship with search engines, then when competition does come about you’re going to be ready and at the top. SERP rankings take a lot of time to earn, so use this time while you’re alone to get ahead so you don’t have to start from square one when the competition arrives (and it will arrive!).
It’s important to understand that you don’t necessarily have to hire an SEO agency or spend a lot of money on your SEO campaign if you just have a few competitors. SEO is still important, but there are other things you may want to put higher on the priority list. Still take it seriously, but don’t feel like you need the best SEO help out there in order to be successful (like many other companies do). Try it on your own first and maybe find the help of a smaller agency, and you should be set to go.
