Business owners have discovered the Facebook fan page is a great marketing tool. It can be used to promote special offers and events and to simply communicate with customers and potential customers. What many business owners don’t know is that the fan page can be an important SEO tool. Here are four tips for using your fan page to increase your SEO rankings.

  • Get it right in the beginning. Facebook allows you to choose a user name, which will eventually become your Facebook URL. For example, if my user name is Jane Doe my Facebook URL is https://www.facebook.com/janedoe. You can select your user name here: https://www.facebook.com/username. If you are a tree service in Memphis, you could choose the user name Memphistreeservice. When “Memphis tree service” is searched, your Facebook fan page will appear in the search results. You may find that someone has claimed the user name you want and you will have to get another one. But make sure you like the name. Facebook only allows you to change your user name once.
  • When you are filling out your Facebook fan page profile, you are asked to complete information in the about box. Create SEO content in this box. Use keywords important to your business. You don’t have an unlimited amount of space here but use that space well. Also, don’t forget to put a link to your website in this box.
  • Create relevant links. Facebook allows you to post links on your fan page from other sites. From time to time you may post links from your page. However a great way to increase you SEO is to link to other pages with relevant content. For example, if you are a veterinarian, you may want to link to news about new developments or legislation that affects veterinary medicine. Make sure these are links from reputable sources before posting.
  • Update your page regularly. Nothing is more frustrating then finding a page and the content is outdated. Users want the latest information about your business, not an offer that expired last year, according to Jan. 3, 2010 status. Having fresh content will keep visitors coming back to your page after they find it in the search engines.
