A content management system is essentially software that will lie out different aspects of the content on a website. Whether it be the layout and format, indexing, search functions, or simply creating a publishing schedule, CMS software makes it easy to stay in control of every aspect of your site. There are two different aspects to most software:

  • Management. The management side of CMS helps a Webmaster control different aspects of the content including the way it looks and the way it is optimized for SEO (often using HTML markup). It makes it easy to upload, edit, and revise content.
  • Delivery. As you would assume, the delivery aspect helps a site to offer content to readers at a particular time or through a particular format. It’s all about scheduling and presentation.

Unfortunately for the busy website owners, there are many different types and brands of CMS software available, which makes the decision rough. The first thing that a Webmaster should do is determine where he/she needs the most help (formatting, scheduling, optimizing, etc.) and compare features. Then come the SEO considerations.

How to Make Sure You’re Choosing a CMS That Works for SEO

One thing that is important to consider when it comes to CMS software are the SEO features. There are many different aspects to CMS so many companies forget to put a focus on SEO. However, there are quite a few different ways to make sure you’re getting something that will help you rank well on a Google SERP:

  1. Worry about location – If your company is spread out across the world or is just one little store in your local town, this will affect your SEO strategy and which software works best.
  2. Consider the diversity of your data – Content is sometimes hard to manage because a website has so many different kinds of data including videos, images, diagrams, etc. How often you deal with all of this different type of data will determine where and how you’ll need to optimize your site for SEO.
  3. URL structure concerns – You will want to make sure that your CMS software does not produce multiple URLs for one page of content because Google only likes to see content once. If not, you could wind up with a duplicate content penalty.
  4. Combination SEO tools – it’s important (especially for bloggers) that everyone is able to use the CMS software to optimize content that they upload. There are SEO tools and plugins that can help this, but some CMS software actually has built in functionalities to walk people through different optimization steps (Meta data, keyword usage, etc.).
  5. Always a 301 redirect – Every CMS software should automatically setup a 301 redirect if there are every any changes or issues with your website. A 301 redirect ensures that your content is indexed properly and your links move from one place to the next.
  6. Breadcrumb navigation – This isn’t the most important thing to consider, but it’s something that many websites really like. Breadcrumb navigation is an easy way to help your internal linking and your page navigation; thus helping your SEO.
  7. Category features – Some CMS systems don’t allow you to add sub-categories when it comes time to categorize all of your content. This can hurt your internal structure and can be incredibly limiting if your site grows to discuss more categories than just principle ideas and topics.
  8. The basics – And last but not least, you have to make sure you have the basics. Make sure you can customize your page title, Meta description and keyword tags, and H tags. This is the number one thing you need to do in order to really be successful in SEO and content management!

It’s also important to remember that many different CMS software comes with different packages and different features. If you want to add something on, it’s usually fairly simple. Put a focus on SEO, though, if you really want to make sure that your content is ready to go for Google. Readers come first, but Google should be a close second.
